The New Left's Inaugural Gathering Reveals Scant Sign of a Fresh Start

When the concept of a recent progressive party led by the former Labour leader and Zarah Sultana was originally suggested in the summer, it attracted huge support that countless individuals showed enthusiasm in becoming members.

Even though it became rapidly overwhelmed by arguments – its co-founders disagreed intensely over its founding structure and revenue strategy – many expected this weekend's launch gathering would signal a renewed effort.

Concerning First Day

Many of the attendees are people who left the Labour party, dissatisfied with the policies of the present administration and searching for a ideological base as they worry about the increasing popularity of the competing political group.

As plans for the party's first official gathering were completed, Sultana and Corbyn looked to have resolved their differences. Participating in a leftwing festival in Manchester last month, Sultana jokingly compared the duo to the well-known duo, remarking: “Let me assure you the show is back on the road.”

Yet when the entrances to the event venue in Liverpool opened on Saturday morning, Sultana was noticeably absent. As Corbyn gave his introductory speech, she was sipping hot chocolate in a coffee shop about a brief walk from the conference site.

Governance Division

It became evident there was significant disagreement on how the party should be led. Corbyn stated to reporters he supported a traditional leadership model, with one person voted into power, and implied he’d be inclined to stand if members voted for this option.

However, in an interview, Sultana said she was supporting a collective leadership structure, with important choices being taken by rank-and-file supporters – those not currently acting as elected officials. She commented that she did not think parties should be run by “single leaders”. She did, nonetheless, indicate she would be willing to stand against Corbyn if there was a contest for a individual head.

Problematic Environment

Although Sultana insisted she and the ex-party head were maintaining a positive relationship – they had, she said, talked about how they hoped the conference to be “an encouraging gathering where members feel empowered” – she was highly critical about various associates and party administrators whom she believes are briefing against her. She would not specify who, but it is known that relations between her supporters and Corbyn’s ex-senior aide Karie Murphy are notably strained.

The politician – who left Labour in July – also mentioned that there was still a “negative atmosphere” among others in Your Party, which had caused “bullying, intimidation and smears” and “planned interference”.

Protest and Factionalism

Strains escalated significantly around the afternoon when it became known Sultana would avoid the initial sessions of the conference, in support for would-be delegates who had been denied entry from the event due to affiliations with other leftwing groups – particularly the the political group. Her spokesperson described this as a “political persecution”, adding: “We need to establish a party that welcomes all socialists.”

Corbyn's associates – who wrongly asserted on Saturday morning that the SWP was registered with the regulatory body – were angry, accusing Sultana of trying to create a “distraction”. They think allowing multiparty membership would cause disruption and worsen internal divisions which already appears to have crippled the fledgling movement.

On the status of the Socialist Workers party, one supporter of Corbyn said: “Although it isn't officially listed by the regulatory body but it is clearly an organization. The name speaks for itself.”

Frustration Among Delegates

Numerous attendees were frustrated that Saturday’s events descended into internal disputes when they would have preferred to focus on important topics such as the economic pressures and immigration, as well as preparing for next year’s local elections.

The new organization is yet to decide if it will present its own contenders or back socialist independents and some participants believe the party will have not succeeded if it is not available as a choice as an replacement for Labour.

Hope for The Second Day

The result is unclear if proceedings can be rescued on Sunday, when the decisions of key votes – such as the final designation and governance model – will be revealed. Sultana plans to attend and speak to the crowd, which has comforted those who still desire unity.

But many participants remained disheartened as they made their way of the event venue into a rainy Liverpool night on Saturday. Perhaps the atmosphere of the day was summed up by a single delegate, who said: “My large glass of wine is turning into a full bottle.”
