The female victim who was stabbed to her neck area in an unprovoked attack near a bus shelter within Birmingham has died, police have confirmed.
The deceased woman, who was 34, was targeted in Smallbrook Queensway, just outside Bullring shopping complex, just prior to 21:00 GMT on Friday, West Midlands Police said.
Djeison Rafael, 21, appeared before Birmingham court Monday morning, charged over the violent incident.
Originally charged of attempted murder but following the woman's death charges were upgraded to include murder.
Police Response
Authorities stated police personnel will remain around the city centre through Monday to offer reassurance, while detectives assisted the woman's family.
Investigators are requesting any eyewitnesses who might have observed Mr Rafael, who is described as British citizen of Black ethnicity, reportedly dressed in an all-grey tracksuit, black hat, athletic shoes with a backpack.
Attack Site Details
The knife attack occurred near Bullring retail complex, across from the main entrance of New Street railway station.
Law enforcement confirmed they classified it as a random violent act with investigators stating they were working to understand why it happened.
Witness Accounts
Shalini Doal, who works nearby, described paramedic and police activity when she finished her shift around 10 PM on Friday.
She characterized the location as "quite chaotic", adding that some of her colleagues heard loud disturbances around 9 PM.
"A lot of co-workers take public transport, ride the tramline... our safety is at risk essentially, here in the city centre."
Another individual, twenty-five, resident of Stoke, mentioned visiting the city fairly regularly to see his girlfriend resident there, expressing concern about what had happened.
"It causes concern for my girlfriend," he said.
"She lacks transportation and works at all of the big music venues... considering a totally random act [happened], understandably, it's terrible."
